Hinckley Forum Voucher Debate now on
Comcast “On Demand”
Salt Lake City, UT — September 17, 2007 — Voters now have easy access to both sides of Utah’s voucher arguments, thanks to a recent debate hosted by the University of Utah’s Hinckley Forum. This debate is now available on Utah’s largest cable provider, Comcast, via their “On Demand” service.
Speaking for vouchers was Richard Eyre, a New York Times best-selling author who ran for governor in 1992. He writes about family values and in the early 90’s wrote a chapter on vouchers as a means to increase parental involvement in education.
Speaking against vouchers was Representative Spackman Moss who has served for seven years as a Democratic state legislator from District 37 and currently serves on the House Education Committee. She taught for 33 years in Utah’s east side public schools.
Arguments against vouchers centered on the lack of accountability for private schools. Rep. Moss argued that while public schools are required to administer five standardized exams private schools only have to administer one.
Mr. Eyre focused his arguments on the savings the voucher program will bring to public schools while reducing class sizes. He shared that parents should be trusted to choose the best education for their children.
Comcast is providing this debate as part of their educational and public service offerings, including local election coverage.
Voters can access the debate if they are Comcast subscribers with basic digital boxes. Go to channel 1, choose “Utah on Demand,” “Education,” then “Voucher Debate.”
