Why this matters

Some of the most important decisions affecting our K-12 education system are made at the state capitol by the Utah State Legislature.

Use this section to find out what's going on at the Legislature and how you can easily be engaged.

 Committees

Legislative committees lie at the heart of Utah’s legislative process. They're open to the public and provide a forum for citizens to express their views about proposed legislation, budgets, and other public policy issues.

Standing Committees

During the Legislative Session, legislators meet in standing committees to discuss and vote on proposed legislation.  Most bills must pass a committee vote before being voted on by the rest of the legislature.

You can have meeting agendas and minutes emailed to you as soon as they're available.

Education Bills

Through the State Legislature's website, you can look up education bills and find important information about them, including bill language, who voted for it, and where it is in the legislative process.

Each bill has a homepage where you can read the bill's text and check its status in the legislative process (if it's become public)

Legislative Audits

Legislative Session

The Utah State Legislature does most of it work in the General Session, which lasts 45 days starting on the 3rd Monday in January of each year.

Education Interim Committee

Between Legislative Sessions, legislators assigned to the Education Interim Committee meet regularly to discuss K-12 issues.

Contact Your Legislator

Contact your legislators about issues that are important to you.  The most effective forms of contact are in person or on the phone.  Letters are more effective than emails.  If you email your legislator, please be sure to indicate in the subject line that you are his or her constituent.  You'll be much more likely to get a response.

This is an online resource that explains and links you to everything you'll need to get involved in the legislative process.

Visit the Capitol

The Utah State Capitol is open to visitors every day during the Legislative Session.  Visit the Capitol to attend committee meetings, listen to floor debates, or meet your legislator in person.

Attend a Committee Meeting

Committee meetings are open to the public and provide a forum for citizens to express their views about proposed legislation.

You can attend a committee meeting in person or watch it online. Those in attendance are often given time to voice their opinion about a bill to legislators.

Listen to a Committee Meeting

If you can't attend a committee meeting in person, you can listen to it live on the internet by going to the committees homepage or the Legislature's homepage (www.le.utah.gov)
